to curry favour
To curry favour with someone — подлизаться к кому-нибудь для получения поддержки, помощи. Это выражение никак не связано с индийской приправой карри. Currying — это термин, использующийся в кругах, связанных с лошадьми и скачками и означающий «чистить щёткой или ходить за лошадью, ухаживать, холить». В этом выражении слово favour не означает услугу. История такова. Сначала слово favel на старофранцузском языке означало рыжую лошадь (такие лошади считались очень хитрыми). Позже это выражение изменилось на currying favour и в настоящее время употребляется в значении заработать авторитет, используя подобострастие и лесть.

The new political party is hoping to curry favour with the working class. — Новая политическая партия надеется завоевать расположение рабочего класса.
